Biobased construction: rethinking how we build
From his own climate-neutral biobased home to the wider construction transition, Reinier shows what is already possible and why materials, energy and design need to work together.
Construction accounts for a large share of resource use and CO₂ emissions. Biobased construction – with materials such as timber, straw, hemp and flax – offers a promising alternative. Reinier van den Berg speaks from personal experience: his climate-neutral, biobased home was completed in 2020.
In this talk Reinier shares what he learned during the design and construction process: about insulation, energy, material choices, indoor climate and the practical hurdles along the way. He broadens the story to the construction transition as a whole and shows why building with natural materials benefits both the climate and residents.
